Beyond the CIA Triad, cybersecurity also relies on concepts like authentication, authorisation, accountability, and non-repudiation.

The cybercriminal ecosystem never rests; it evolves at a frenetic pace. These are the most common threats a company faces today:

  • Malware: Malicious software with many faces. It can be spyware, Trojans, or ransomware, which can encrypt or disrupt a company’s systems and demand a ransom to restore access to the data.

Cybersecurity is a specialised field in its own right. There are many specialised fields within it, just as there are specialised fields in medicine, i.e., surgeon, paediatrician, and radiologist, and in digital security there are quite well-defined specialities:

  • Network and Infrastructure Security: People who monitor borders and data flows to make sure no one gets unauthorised access to communications.
  • Cloud security: As everyone shifts to cloud environments, those working in cloud security handle the risk management of working in a virtual environment.
  • Application security: Programming sensibly. Security protection must be built into the application right from the first line of code.
  • Cryptography: The technique of concealing and encoding data such that if an attacker captures the data, it appears to be a meaningless series of characters.
  • Ethical Hacking: The “good guys” of the industry. Hackers who are paid to attack the company‘s own systems intentionally to identify potential security flaws before nefarious hackers can then suggest solutions.
  • Incident response: The digital firefighters. When a system has been compromised, they will step in to minimise the harm, put out the flames, and get things back to normal.
  • Compliance and regulations: the legal side. Making sure the company complies with privacy laws exactly and avoids great fines.

Protecting a business isn’t the result of improvisation or last-minute fixes. It requires a continuous and perfectly oiled cycle:

  • Govern: Establishing cybersecurity strategy, policies, roles, responsibilities, and risk-management expectations.
  • Identification: Knowing exactly what you have. You can’t protect what you don’t know exists (computers, servers, databases).
  • Protection: Raise the walls. Technical controls, firewalls, and staff awareness to make it difficult for the attacker.
  • Detection: The observation of the systems and network activity that may indicate an attempted or successful intrusion.
  • Respond: Maintain your cool. In the event of a virus, there are procedures for isolating the infected machine and eliminating the threat.
  • Recovery: Close the windows, restore the previous backup, try to find what went wrong, and redesign the system to be stronger than ever.

Today, digital dependence is absolute. From small neighbourhood shops to large organisations and critical infrastructure, cybersecurity risks must be managed. This situation has created a continued demand for cybersecurity professionals, while organisations also report shortages in specific cybersecurity skills and capabilities.

Why Is Cybersecurity Job Growth Increasing?

  • The Internet of Things (IoT): Now the television, the refrigerator, the car and the office lights are connected to the network, multiplying the points that a hacker can attack.
  • More aggressive attacks: The targets are no longer individuals; they go after critical infrastructure (hospitals, power grids, banks).
  • Stricter laws: Governments and regulators are introducing or strengthening cybersecurity, privacy, and resilience requirements in various jurisdictions and industries.

Cybersecurity can no longer be considered an “expense” or a whim of the technical department; it is a direct investment in the survival, reputation and continuity of any business.
